Kitchen additions and renovations have an exterior impact as well. Learn about the elements of design that make a seamless addition to and complement a home's exterior.

  • Any addition must take into consideration what volumes and proportions the home can withstand. The same vocabulary - materials, shapes and colors, for example - should be used for a blended, natural look. Instead of just being boxes, additions can be imaginative with new forms and shapes, all of which use the style and proportions of the original structure.
  • To help blend the old and new, similar moldings and window styles should be used. Kitchen renovations provide a welcome opportunity to add light to a space.
  • Copper used for roofing on the exterior can be used in a more refined way in the interior, for a chimney surround and backsplash.
  • Bring the details you love on the exterior (columns, graceful archways, colors and materials) to the interior for an addition you will enjoy. Good design repeats an exterior element, like the arch over the window inside, with an arch over the counter.
