Virginia Treasure

Dream Builders : Episode DRB-1113 -- More Projects »
When the Norton family asked architect/builder Tom Hemphill to visit their home on Lake Barcroft, he was surprised to find a design relic lost beneath years of bad decisions. A yellow pool enclosure, insensitive additions and extensive security cages hid a rectangular steel frame with a flat roof. Although the simple design didn't fit the Nortons' image of a comfortable home, it became the springboard for a major undertaking that would include a new addition and the renovation of the original house.

Tom and his construction team began by tearing out the previous additions and leaving the exposed steel structure in place. Next, they constructed a two-story addition, inspired by the exposed steel columns and beams. For a measure of continuity, the entire house was covered with synthetic stucco. Inside, large glass walls open the living and dining space to the outside. The space, defined by the original steel columns, flows into a sunken living room overlooking the pool and lake.
