Figure B
Remember the handyman's saying "measure twice, cut once?" That’s a familiar phrase meaning accurate measurements are the cornerstone of any successful project. A folding rule should be a standard item in your toolbox.

A hook rule is useful for small projects, such as building toys or duplicating parts for fine furniture. One end hooks on the edge of your work (figure A), keeping the ruler steady and allowing for an accurate measurement without any movement. Hook rules also show English and metric measurements on opposite sides of the ruler.

A center finder rule is simple to use and divides measurements in half (figure B). Just line up the edges and mark your center point.
