Figure B
There are many different types of brackets or supports to choose from when hanging a shelf. A couple of the most common types are the metal brackets and the solid wood brackets. Utility brackets are normally seen out in the garage (figure A). They’re very durable, tough and strong. Some are rated to hold up to 1,000 pounds when mounted with appropriate long screws.

A scroll bracket is a great choice when you're looking for a more decorative look (figure B). Look for brackets that have a keyhole in the back, allowing the bracket to slide down over the top of a screw head. Remember that the closer the screw head is to the wall, the tighter the fit on the bracket.

No matter what type of shelving you plan to mount, make sure you drill through the existing wall surface and securely into a stud. That way you’ll get all the extra support that you need.
