Toolbox: Large-bore Drill Bits

Help Around the House : Episode ARH-303 -- More Projects »
Most of the drill bits used around the house are small, usually a half-inch in diameter or less. But projects such as running pipes and wires or installing new door locks call for a larger-gauge bit. For these tasks you'll need specialized drilling hardware such as paddle bits, hole saws and auger bits.

A one-inch paddle bit typically has spurs for extra cutting power and a pointed tip to keep the bit in position while drilling (figure A). A bit like this is used to install the dead bolt and striking mechanism in a door.

A 2-1/8 inch hole saw cuts through the body of the door and creates the opening for the locking mechanism (figure B). It's called a saw because it has cutting teeth.

An auger bit has a screw on the tip to make it easier to get started (figure C). An auger bit's used when you need a hole quick and it doesn't have to be pretty.

Always use caution when working with power drills, and be sure to wear adequate eye protection.
