Cheesecloth is a familiar item in the kitchen, where it's used to strain soups or sauces, but it has a lot of other uses around the house.

Old-time craftsmen used cheesecloth to strain paints and varnishes. Straining eliminated lumps and debris, which resulted in a smoother surface after painting. Cheesecloth's also ideal for applying stain, as it doesn't leave any lint. The versatile cloth can also be used to polish surfaces.

Tack cloth is basically just cheesecloth coated with wax. It's useful to clean up a wooden surface after sanding. Just wipe the surface and the tack cloth picks up all the dust, leaving a nice, smooth surface.
