Toolbox: Air Compressors

Though not a tool you might use every day, an air compressor is a handy device to have around the house or shop. Compact units are available for less than $100 and can be used to maintain pressure in your car's tires or, with attachments, as an airbrush for fine painting and detail.

Larger units with storage tanks can power a variety of tools. They're more expensive but you can rent the compressor and attachments. A larger compressor can be used with paint sprayers; nail guns, drills and sanders. Air tools are especially convenient to work with because they are powerful, smooth and since they have fewer moving parts are nearly vibration free.
