Denver has one architectural style unique to the city, a style created out of necessity. Tuberculosis swept the country at the turn of the 20th century and the warm weather and high altitude of Denver were thought to provide a cure. Architects soon were building "TB houses" designed to capture the best nature had to offer in the Mile High city.
The homes were mainly one-story bungalows featuring a combination of Prairie and Spanish Mission-style architecture. They also had open floor plans with fewer walls allowing air to circulate throughout the house. Other characteristics included central fireplaces and large sleeping porches.
