Host Joan Kohn visits the large and inviting kitchen in Steve and Mary Meadows' home, which was built to capture the feel of a turn-of-the-century farmhouse. Architect Bill McGuire designed an open floor plan that takes advantage of wonderful views and places the U-shaped kitchen literally in the heart of the home.
- Aged wood and classic marble give the kitchen a warm, timeless look. The cabinets and flooring are made from antique oak, and the counters are made from huge slabs of white marble. The ceiling is made with 130-year-old hemlock beams.
- Ceiling height was used to help create distinctive areas in the open floor plan. The kitchen and eating areas have a cozy feel under a lowered wood beam ceiling. The family room has a soaring cathedral ceiling.
- The long island that separates the kitchen work area from the rest of the open floor plan is stocked full of features. It has one of the two dishwashers in the kitchen as well as two freezer drawers, a large farmhouse sink, and the recycle center.
- The oversized cooker is flanked by two pantries with seasoned oak shelving. One pantry stores dishes and glasses, while the other contains food. These pantries compensate for the lack of upper cabinets. A plate rack over the sink provides easily accessible storage for dinnerware.
