Shangri La, former home of Doris Duke, is on the island of Oahu.

American Tobacco and Duke Energy heiress Doris Duke was known as "the richest little girl in the world" when her father passed away when she was 13 years old. Duke's desire for privacy led her to build a 14,000-square-foot retreat on the island of Oahu.

After she passed away in the early 1990s, Duke left the bulk of her fortune to establish the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and created the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art to open Shangri La to the public.
