Our Landscape Smart goal was to transform this boring yard into a space with shaded areas, color, texture and creativity. For starters, designer Dennis Murray suggested building a canvas-covered structure over the patio (left) and staining the concrete surface to reduce glare. He also suggested trimming and reshaping some of the trees and adding a few more trees for additional shade.
Before the makeover there was very little shade covering this patio, making it very hot and uncomfortable to sit outside.
The lower branches of this tree were removed and flowers planted were planted underneath creating an additional colorful and shady seating area.
A plain brick patio gets a stunning and surprisingly inexpensive copper-roofed gazebo.
