Sanding Away a Door Squeak

Help Around the House : Episode ARH-255 -- More Projects »
Help Around the House host Henry Harrison shows a guest how to silence a squeaky door by fabricating a sanding tool to sand down areas of the door jamb where the door rubs. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a one.

Tools:

scissors
open-coat 100-grit sandpaper with adhesive backing

Steps:

1. Since the door is made of composite material, it cannot be sanded. And the hinges are also fixed, so the way the door hangs cannot be adjusted. The only way to eliminate the friction is by sanding the areas of the door jamb where the door rubs.

2. First find a piece of molding to fit in area. Cut sandpaper to size, peel off the backing and affix to the narrow edge of the molding (figure A). Open-coat paper is grayish in color, and won't clog as easily as standard sandpaper.

3. Sand the area where the door is rubbing, causing the squeak (figure B). Stop often and check for fit as you go.
