Roof Cement

House Detective : Episode HDT-601 -- More Projects »
Our homeowners in Jacksonville, Fla., learned their roof had been patched from the inside with roofing cement. That's wrong on two counts: roofs should be repaired from the outside not the inside and roof cement is to be used as a temporary stop gap, not for permanent repairs.

Asphalt roofs will expand when it's hot and contract when it's cold. Roof cement dries out, becomes rigid, cracks and separates over time. Those cracks allow water intrusion. Roof cement can be used for minor repairs, like reconnecting loose shingles. It can also be used to caulk flashing. But roof cement is not for big jobs.

If your roof is in need of major repair the best idea is to call in a professional. A big patch job with roof cement can only lead to bigger problems down the road.
