The team removes an old, standard bathtub then builds a deck for a new oval tub. Below is a summary of the basic steps, as well as a list of tools and materials used in this project.
Tools and Materials:
hammer, chisels and pry bars
tile saw, miter saw, circular saw, jig saw and reciprocating saw
compressor and finish nailer
tile installation tools
maple 1x4 for cabinet face
maple raised-panel doors
six 8’ 2x4s of Douglas fir
two sheets of cement backer board
copper plumbing fitting
pipe waste and overflow
Thinset mortar
grout
lacquer
paint
tile
Steps:
1. Remove your existing tub, be careful not to destroy the surrounding wall. Cut down the pony wall to desired height. Remove tile tub surround.
2. Depending on the style you choose for the new tub, it may be necessary to replace or move the plumbing fixtures. If you are not comfortable with basic plumbing, call a professional.
3. Construct a frame for the new tub with 2x4s. Build the deck with plywood. Trace the tub’s pattern onto the plywood and cut out the opening with a jig saw.
4. Screw cement board onto the plywood deck. Tile the deck and surrounding wall with square tile and bull nose trim. Once the tile is set up, grout the seams and allow it to dry completely.
5. Attach the raised-panels on the front side of the tub.
