Home repair expert Henry Harrison shows a guest how easy it is to replace her broken trash compactor. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a one.

Tools:

hammer
nail set
screwdriver
putty knife
pry bar
gloves
safety glasses
trash compactor, new or refurbished

Steps:

1. Unscrew kick plate with screwdriver and remove (figure A).

2. Remove drawer from compactor (figure B).

3. You may need to pry trim away from counter with putty knife and pry bar to remove main body of the compactor (figure C).

4. Lift compactor out from under counter and set on towel to move so you don’t scratch floor.

5. Plug in new unit and test it to make sure it works. If all is well, push compactor back under the counter and reattach trim.
