Home repair expert Henry Harrison shows a guest how to remove a side-hinged window that tends to blow open and mount it permanently. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a two.

Steps:

1. Put on safety glasses and pry window and trim pieces away from window frame (figure A).

2. Mark the plywood for cuts to give you the relief large enough to fit the window so it rests against the inner frame. Use a combination square to mark the cuts (figure B).

3. Make a notch with a chisel so you can get started, then saw away a relief using a pull saw (figure C).

4. Fit window into the opening, place a clip on each side and mark the position for the clip on the window frame (figure D).

5. Drill pilot holes for the clips and attach to the frame with screws. Put the window back in place and bend the clips over with pliers (figure E).

6. Secure the clips to the window using screws (figure F). Use an awl to make holes in the window frame to get the screws started.

7. Reinstall the trim pieces.
