In the early 1850s, the City by the Bay was a dismal place with crude wooden buildings and dirt roads. But one man, William Ralston, helped changed the city by founding the Bank of California and the California Theatre. For his next trick, he created a magnificent Italian Villa.

His 55,000-square-foot country retreat was complete with an opera box, crystal chandeliers, a grand ballroom and wall panels of etched glass and wood. Ralston's vision of a grand city is reflected in his magnificent getaway.
