Poured-Earth Home

Architect Michael Frerking is a proponent of green building, so when he decided to build his own home in Prescott, Ariz., he put his words into action by constructing a dream house out of poured earth. Frerking acted as his own contractor and hired builder Darren Haenny to manage the pour. The slope of the building site complicated the pour, as did locating the home between boulders.

With the pour complete, Frerking began carving out the central living space. Everything is open so one can see in all directions, even the master bedroom. The kitchen is in the center of the space. Frerking designed what he termed "light shelves" to provide natural light without letting in direct sunlight. Other features include a spectacular entryway and curved beams in the ceilings.
