  • When planning an outdoor kitchen, the most important consideration is function. The same principles for efficient design apply to the outdoor as well as the indoor kitchen.
  • Try placing work stations in progression. For example, first place the sink, then next a preparation area, then the cooking area adjacent to that. Cooking options include gas and charcoal grills as well as wood ovens.
  • Easy access to the inside is a key consideration, since most items will have to come from and return to the indoor kitchen.
  • A useful feature to incorporate is an outdoor refrigerator, perhaps a smaller one that fits under the counter.
  • A separate set of knives and utensils to be used outdoors is another good idea.
  • If space allows, include a sitting/congregation area and a generous dining area near the cooking zone.
  • When choosing appliances, be sure they can withstand the weather conditions in your area.
