Sea rescue stations sprang up along the Atlantic Coast more than a century ago. The buildings housed the men and equipment needed for heroic rescues at sea. When Georgia and Brian McGrath came upon an empty life saving station in Spring Lake, New Jersey they knew they had to have it.

Over a series of years, the couple converted the oceanfront building into a stunning home, complete with granite floors and the original lookout tower. Historian Michael Fowler explained how these buildings were especially vital along the rough waters of the New Jersey shore. The McGraths may have changed the building's purpose, but they've preserved its legacy for years to come.
