Iditarod racer Mary Shields has carved a legacy out of the Alaska wilderness. Shields was the first woman to ever finish the amazing and daunting 1000-mile sled dog race. She now lives in an understated but charming cabin near Fairbanks. The 28 by 28-foot square cabin features a kitchen, study and bedroom and an unusual sod roof.

And you'll not find her beloved pups lounging in a standard issue plastic doghouse. Her 10 Alaskan huskies each have a log doghouse of their own.
