Luigi and Mary Perini live in an old gristmill in Washington County, Maryland. It originally ground wheat from local farms into flour. Today, the stream that powered a water wheel for the mill runs through the Perini’s home.

In addition to the stream, the converted stone structure has several other interesting remnants of its past. A pair of one-ton millstones rest out on the lawn, and a millstone cover serves as a coffee table. Upstairs, three bedrooms and a quilting studio fill the space where grain was stored. Today, Mary’s friends gather for quilting bees where massive bins once stored grain almost 200 years ago.
