All About

We've all heard the term "two-by-four (2x4)" - that's a piece of lumber roughly two inches wide by four inches deep. It's commonly used in home building and repairs. But using 2x4s as joists is not a good idea, as our homeowners in Coloma, Mich., found out.

They used 2x4s improperly to build their deck. While it may have looked solid, it can't support the weight it may be required to hold. And if that's the case, it can be a big problem. So here are some rules to remember when it comes to using 2x4s:

  • Never use 2x4s for floor framing. They're not strong enough to support the weight.
  • 2x4s can be used as wall studs. 2x8s or bigger are best for floors.
  • Hire a contractor or an architect if you suspect 2x4s were used improperly in your home or deck construction. They can help evaluate the situation.

If you're shopping for 2x4s, do your homework. Some are made of composite wood materials that tend to absorb water and don't hold screws or nail as well as solid wood. It's never 2 late to be in-4-ormed!
