The 1950s were a time of optimism and innovation. And a new style of home was being built in the hills north of San Francisco. Joseph Eichler hired a team of architects to design a hip, new type of home for the middle class. The homes had to be affordable, progressive and above all modern.

Eichler homes had very few walls, a lot of glass and a center atrium that took advantage of the California climate and made the homes feel even larger. The homes also featured the latest conveniences including built-in dishwashers and high-tech ovens. This home is a perfect example of how space age design met modern convenience in San Francisco.
