Installing and Repairing Gutter Guards

Vinyl or aluminum gutter guards ease the hassle of cleaning gutters.

Materials and Tools:

sharp scissors or snips to cut gutter guard material
tool to clean gutter
needle-nose pliers
speed square
gutter guard material
tools to repair gutter (if necessary) including pop rivet tool, silicone caulk and caulk gun, and drill.

Tips: Install the gutter guard from the rooftop only if you have secure footing. Otherwise, use a ladder.
The gutter guard strips should overlap by about 1/4". For outside corners, miter the cuts for a smooth fit. Use the speed square to mark the 45-degree angle cuts. For inside corners, simply butt the pieces of gutter guard together.

Steps:

Install the gutter guard
1. Clean the gutters with the gutter cleaning tool. Be sure to wear heavy gloves to protect your hands from sharp gutter edges and debris. Check for damage to the gutters as you clean. If you are using a ladder, clean the gutter to your left and right, then install the gutter guard before you move your ladder.
2. Attach the clips to the gutter guard. If necessary, the clips can be removed with needle-nose pliers.
3. With the gutter guard folded away from the gutter, clip the guard to the top of the gutters on the side farthest from the roof.
4. Fold the guard over and snug it to the shingles.

Repair damage to gutters
1. Clean around the damaged area, using an abrasive such as steel wool.
2. Cut a patch to the appropriate size. If possible, use the same material as the gutter.
3. Place the patch over the damaged area and drill rivet holes through the patch and gutter.
4. Run a bead of silicone caulk around the damaged area, including the rivet holes.
5. Position the patch and rivet it into place.
