Jepson Wulff and his wife Neely Washington found the perfect place to raise their eight children in the 1960s. They turned an old classroom building of a liberal arts college in Middlesex, Vt., into a family home.

The unconventional building needed lots of work, so Wulff got started on the necessary construction while allowing the children to design and build their own bedrooms. Son Clark had a fondness for exposed brick while daughter Jeannette remembers putting up sheet-rock after school.
