It’s hard to make the connection between a 16,000-square-foot factory and a comfortable home, but that’s exactly what Dick and Nancy Boynton did. It took them four years to transform an oil-drenched mill in Connecticut into a residence with shiny hardwood floors and breathtaking views.

Since the Boyntons had plenty of space to play around with, they added unique touches such as turning a tool crib into a china cabinet and using a tool sculpture as a wall-divider. Dick appreciates the factory’s 1923 freight elevator that he uses for hauling wood from the cellar to the third floor. The 1795 mill, which was the first place in the country to produce nails by machine, offers the Boyntons a 21st century quality of life.
