Healthy House

Bobbie and Bob Diebold wanted an indoor environment free from pollution and stress, so they decided to build a healthier house in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. By healthy, the Diebolds mean a home that’s low on chemicals and other sources of indoor pollution. For assistance, they turned to architect Jim Burton and builder Steve Whittington.

Burton responded with a tri-level contemporary design that would bring in the views and the natural light. But more importantly, the team worked closely with Bobbie to select each material. All the paints, sealers and other liquid products were tested. If she had no adverse health reaction, the products went into the build. If she rejected them, alternatives were found. Inert or natural materials such as stone, metal and concrete were used wherever possible. The home also features an air exchange system that clears the air every three hours and a central vacuum for virtually dustless cleaning.

The home has great style to go along with the health benefits. A spiral staircase leads to a loft with views of the living room, breakfast area and mountain ranges. The master bedroom, with its private balcony, feels like a tree house. The couple also built a greenhouse for year-round gardening.
