After: The cozy kitchen renovation resulted in a domino effect of other remodeling changes throughout the home, which led to a ballooning budget and stretched schedule. In the end, the homeowners were satisfied with the dramatic changes to their kitchen and adjacent rooms. Following are some lessons learned by the homeowners in this makeover project.

Lessons Learned: Surviving Construction

*These homeowners lived 70 miles away from their project. When it became too costly to rent an apartment and make payments on a new home, they opted to move into the construction zone sans the standard kitchen amenities. They made do by hunkering down in the basement and grilling meals on the back porch as much as possible.

*There will always be delays in the construction process. Expect to spend a few more months than originally scheduled, but be assertive to make sure that delays do not go unnecessarily long.
