Lessons Learned: Design Matters

*Know your house and the neighborhood! The homeowners added several cosmetic upgrades like natural wood trim, built-ins and wainscoting as a way to keep with the Victorian charm of the home.

*The Bottinellis chose a vivid blue paint scheme with marine life murals for both children's bedroom. This can be easily changed to more traditional tastes when children get older or when selling the home.

*As a remodel progresses, it gets harder and harder to stay within the original budget. It's especially easy to veer off course when selecting permanent fixtures. The homeowners upgraded several features, including the staircase, metal ceiling panels and natural wood trim, which caused an increase in the budget.
