Lessons Learned: Design Matters

*Going green doesn't mean there has to be a compromise on design. The architect found options that both fit into the design and were environmentally friendly. This included linoleum floors, which contain all-natural materials and no vinyl, yet feature a tough and attractive finish.

*The homeowners for this project saved a lot of money by traveling to pick up their cabinets rather than having them delivered. Assembling and installing the cabinets themselves also saved money.

Surviving Construction

*The homeowners for this project had to be flexible, and then some. From the beginning. They planned a space away from the construction to use as kitchen space, but had to give it up when unexpected electrical issues required work in that space. Martha was able to work from home for some of the renovation, which allowed her to keep an eye on progress more closely.
