A faulty sewer main can be decidedly unpleasant.
As we saw in New Orleans, all was not swell because of the smell. The homeowners there tried to cover up a foul odor, but it didn't get rid of the problem. They had to snuff out the cause before they could finally sink the stink. The cause turned out to be a backed up drain line. But most household odors can be eliminated fairly easily.

Many problems come from moisture and the mold and mildew that it feeds. Here are some typical places in your home where you can clear the air:

  • Deodorize the garbage disposal at least once a month using an over-the-counter cleaner.
  • Open the washing machine after each load. This will allow air to circulate and kill mildew fungus.
  • Pour water into basement floor drains monthly. This will cut down on the discharge of plumbing gasses.

And don't forget about those cooking odors. Proper ventilation is a must. Trust your nose and take some time to smell the roses. We all want a home sweet-smelling home!
