A band clamp is a handy tool for removing plumbing fixtures without scratching.
Home repair expert Henry Harrison helps a guest remove the spigot on her kitchen faucet and replace the aerator. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a one.

Steps:

1. Wrap the band clamp around the aerator and turn to remove (figure A).

2. Remove the tiny screens with a pushpin and inspect the aerator for damage (figure B). Even tiny chips can result in debris blocking the hole and restricting your water flow. Replace the aerator if it appears damaged.

3. Before installing the new aerator, clean the threads of the faucet using an old toothbrush (figure C).

4. Rub a dab of plumber's grease around the threads.
