The Bridge House straddles 72 feet across a ravine and rises 42 feet above the ground below. To make matters more precarious, this Oakland home outside San Francisco is situated next to an active fault, putting it right in the middle of a seismic zone. Not to worry, though, architect and owner Tom Collom engineered the house using an arched truss system that will not only carry the load of the house above but distribute the weight down and outward. In effect, the house is braced between the two sides of the canyon.
