Electrical Upgrades

House Detective : Episode HDT-710 -- More Projects »
The homeowners in Riverside, California, will have to bring their classic home up to modern standards. The electrical system will have to be upgraded and the entire house will have to be rewired. And although the cost may be shocking, it's necessary to eliminate any type of electrical hazard.

Modern appliances like air-conditioning, microwaves and hair dryers weren't household necessities years ago. To handle the electrical demand, older homes should have their main service panel upgraded to at least 100 amps. And the service panels should have dedicated circuits for each of the homes major appliances. When updating and rewiring, here are some tips:

  • Electrical outlets should be spaced 6 to 8 feet apart throughout the house. That will eliminate the need to run extension cords that could be a fire hazard.
  • All new outlets must be the 3-prong type to help avoid electrical shocks.
  • Install Ground Fault Circuit Interpreter outlets in the kitchen, bathrooms and outdoors. These outlets will shut themselves down to prevent an electrical shock if they get wet.

Upgrading and rewiring the service panel is a job for a licensed electrician. Let him do the work so you can relax and enjoy your new updated homes.
