The Edmondston-Alston House features a commanding view of the harbor and was one of the first grand homes to be built along the waterfront location of the High Battery. Charles Edmondston built his home in 1825, though he was forced to sell during the panic of 1837 to Charles Alston, a member of an established rice-planting dynasty.

General P.T. Beauregard watched the barrage that launched the Civil War from the third floor piazza. Today the house is furnished with Alston family paintings, furniture, silver, books and other items from the antebellum period.
