Edible House

Dream Builders : Episode DRB-911 -- More Projects »
The list of building materials for Julee Herdt's home reads like a list of health-food staples and includes wheat, soy and sunflowers. With a gabled roof that gestures toward the mountains, the Herdt house looks traditional even though the materials used to build it are anything but.

Herdt, an assistant professor of architecture at the University of Colorado, designed and built her 4,700-square-foot home in Boulder to test the durability of bio-based products. The home features cabinets and wall panels created from sunflower plants and soy adhesives. The particleboard is made from wheat straw. Other building materials include salvaged wood from cable spools and bowling alley lanes. Herdt hopes these new building materials will enter the marketplace and eventually be adopted by mainstream builders.
