It had long been Dale Marx’s dream to live in a different kind of house, something that didn’t look like much from the outside, but concealed a hidden beauty. So when he and his new wife Tracey Marx found a rundown former diaper laundry in Pennsylvania, it didn't take Dale's artistic eye long to see the swan in the ugly duckling.

The couple started the enormous job of cleaning, gutting and sandblasting the nearly 2,300-square-foot interior with the help of friend and builder Norm Strenger. But the innovation didn’t end there. Dale envisioned a complex interior of odd angles, floors that open to the ceiling and rooms that seem to float among the original beams and trusses.

As a hiker and outdoorsman, Dale's goal was to bring the outdoors inside by using salvaged items. The living room has the airy feel of an outdoor porch, while the downstairs bathroom is designed to look like an outhouse and Tracey’s office emulates a greenhouse. While the building may still be a Plain Jane on the outside, Dale and Tracey have brought the outdoors inside with their unique interior design.
