Just calling the weather in Minnesota "cold" doesn't really do it justice. Up here the snow is measured not in inches or feet but in yards. But winter can also be fun, and Ron and Diane Stanchfield decided they wanted a fun house to go along with it. Their fortress-like residence on Lake Minnetonka features a geodesic dome on the roof that can stand up to 130-mph winds (figures A and B).

Though it's nice enough in the summer, the house is even more fun in the winter. The ice on the lake is thick enough to allow the Stanchfields to mark off an ice rink so their grandchildren can skate. But inside the home is nice and cozy. A spiral staircase and an elevator connect the three levels (figure C). Sunlight pours into the second level and the domed roof is awe-inspiring (figure D). The great room features a fireplace, but the roof itself generates plenty of passive solar heat.
