All About
Have you ever spilled your morning coffee on your hardwood floor? If it happens on occasion and you clean it up, that's not a problem. But it becomes a problem when moisture seeps into the floor and gets trapped in the wood. With enough moisture the boards could begin to cup or dip in the center.
The cupping our homeowner in New Orleans experienced came from downspouts funneling water into the crawl space under the house. That resulted in floor boards absorbing moisture. The same problem can occur in a humid environment. But you can keep your floor boards on the straight and narrow with some preventive measures:
- Install a dehumidifier if your wooden floor is in a humid room or environment.
- Clean all spills immediately. Don't allow standing liquid to seep into the wood.
- Check the kitchen plumbing frequently for leaks that could trap moisture under the floor.
Wood floors should last a minimum of 40 years. Keep them dry and your hard-earned money won't go to repair your hardwood floors.
