Covering Ceiling Seams

Room by Room : Episode RXR-2102 -- More Projects »

The seams created by 4x8 rough-sawn panels make this ceiling look unfinished.

Attaching a 2x2 grid pattern using trim nicely disguises the seams and turns an eyesore into a focal point.
Materials:

decorative trim
saw horses
paint (ceiling: Shoji White SW#7042, trim: Woodscapes solid color house stain SW#3019) (Sherwin-Williams)
4" roller
miter saw
nail gun
spackling compound
foam brush

Steps:

1. Prime and paint all of the trim pieces as desired and let dry.
2. Draw a grid pattern on the ceiling where the center of each trim piece should go. The center line for the perimeter pieces is the edge of the ceiling so rip the trim boards in half for those areas (figure A).

3. Make two 45-degree cuts to the center on the ends of each piece using a miter saw. The angled cuts allow the design to come together like a jigsaw puzzle (figure B). Hold each piece in position and use a nail gun (or hammer and nails) to secure them.
4. Fill all the nail holes and joints with spackling compound and paint spots when dry.
