Cleaning up the Clutter

Curb Appeal : Episode CRB-107 -- More Projects »
Because the front edge is overgrown and unnecessary, the homeowner decides to pull out the hedges in order to open up and reveal the true entry to the home. Next is eliminating obstacles blocking the door such as the table tennis table, old dog beds, bikes and horseback riding equipment.

Then it's time for mason Mike Cookson to replace the paint-chipped concrete out front with light sandstone. Designer Betsy Rick installs a bubbling fountain. New, larger carriage-style brass light fixtures replace the dinky old fixtures.

Rick uses white wicker furniture to fill an empty corner. She adds throw pillows, terra-cotta pots and white flowering jasmine vines that will climb the posts along the front of the porch. Rick moves the kitchen and laundry room doors to the carport to eliminate front door confusion. The carport is also converted to a two-car garage to provide a place to store garbage cans and boxes as well as cars. Rick tears out more unnecessary hedges, resurfaces the driveway and paints the trim of the house.
