A wood and wrought-iron railing provides a safe and visually pleasing solution. This high-speed makeover begins with a home's rear entrance that's falling apart, including an outdoor railing that's unsafe and unsightly. Host Steve Watson and the Don't Sweat It team build a new handrail that's safe and up-to-code, as well as a visual improvement.
Materials and Tools:
8' 2x4 (6)
8' 4x4 (2)
4x4 fence posts (5)
36" twisted iron balusters (53)
outdoor gate hardware (kit)
grinder with cut wheel
drill and masonry bit
table saw
lag bolts
socket set
tape measure
gloves
safety glasses
Steps:
1. Clear the area of clutter and debris.
2. Use a pressure washer to remove dirt, grime and stains from the concrete.
4. For this project, we're replacing the rusted metal railing with one made of pressure-treated lumber and wrought-iron balusters. Using a reciprocating saw and a grinder with a cut-off wheel, cut away the old metal railing. Cut the metal upright supports flush with the concrete.
5. Cut the 4x4's to desired fence height and attach them to the concrete surface using post anchors and masonry screws. Make sure the posts are level and flush.
6. For the posts next to the house, attach the posts to the wall using lag bolts.
7. Using a drill press, drill holes halfway through the 2x4's at four-inch intervals for securing the balusters.
8. Insert balusters at 4" intervals and cap with a matching 2x4 to complete fence sections.
10. Using the same construction process as above, build the gate section to the appropriate measurements.
