When Carol and Michael Kosla bought their two-story Colonial they knew it needed some updating. Architect Kaya Doyle is armed with a plan to combine the Koslas' kitchen and family room into one modern, open great room.

First, all the existing cabinetry and flooring will go, as well as the wall separating the two rooms. She'll borrow space from the family room to expand the kitchen and add new custom cabinetry and granite countertops

Before

Several years and three children later, this family will finally be able to bring their tiny kitchen and old family room into the 21st century.

After

A peninsula breakfast bar will be the only thing separating the two spaces. The family room ceiling will be vaulted with skylights and a stone fireplace will warm up the Koslas' "great" new space.
