A Shovel That Really Measures Up

Make your tools work smarter with this idea

Rebecca's Garden : Episode REB-706 -- More Projects »
Every gardener needs a good shovel, whether it's to dig trenches, move mulch or dig a planting hole. And usually when digging a hole, you usually need to make it a certain size. Since measurement is often part of planting, why not transform your shovel it into two-tools-in-one? It's easy!

The materials for this project are simple. All you need is a good shovel that you can write on. You'll need a yardstick (or a tape measure) and a permanent marker.

  • Lay the shovel on a flat surface next to the yardstick (figure A).

  • Line the straight edge of a yardstick or measuring tape against the shovel head.

  • With a permanent marker, mark the measurements from the straight edge onto the shovel (figure B). Then put it to the test. Dig a hole then measure its depth. The measurements should match.

A great tip for a shovel that really measures up!
