Doll Making Steps

1. Draw a pumpkin pattern piece and trace six pieces onto fabric and cut out to form the pumpkin head (figures B and C).

2. With right sides together, stitch up edges of each pumpkin section until all six are connected forming a ball (figure D). Leave an opening at the bottom of the neck area. Turn right side out and stuff with polyfill.

3. Double thread a doll needle with orange thread. Enter at the bottom of the pumpkin and run the needle through the center, exiting at the top. Wrap the thread around the outside of the pumpkin along one seam line. Repeat at every seam around the pumpkin pulling tight each time (figure E). Tie off.

4. Choose the section of the head for facial features. Place pins in the front of head where you want the eyes placed. With the threaded doll needle, enter the head from the opening in the neck. Come up where a pin was placed and remove the pin. Add a bead to the needle and enter the head next to the first exit point. Go back down through the bottom of the head and pull the thread tight to set the bead for the eye (figure F). Repeat for the other eye. Tie off.

5. Using scraps of fabric, fold a piece of fabric in half. Place Fabri-Tac glue in the fold and press, let dry. Trace four eyelids onto the fabric and cut out, placing the fold along one edge (figure G).

6. Glue one eyelid above each bead on the head. Repeat for the lower lids (figure H).

7. Trace and cut out the one rectangle and two circles for the nosepiece.

8. With right sides together, stitch the rectangle around three sides. Turn and stuff with polyfill. Stitch it vertically to the center of the face between the eyes.

10. Draw the mouth onto the face using a black permanent marker (figure J).

11. Trace and sew the stem with right sides together. Turn and stuff. Glue or stitch the stem into the indentation on top of the pumpkin.

12. Trace and sew one leaf, right sides together with a small piece of quilt batting on top. Turn and close the opening. Stitch veins on the outside of the leaf.

13. Wrap a Chenille stem with flora tape bending into a pleasing shape to create a vine.
