Follow these instructions by Jocelyn Sass to learn how to make your own bib.
Materials and Tools:
Coats & Clark Red Heart Classic (Art. #267) medium worsted-weight yarn:
2 oz. #1 white
small amount #253 tangerine
small amount #12 black
D (3.25) and F (3.75mm) hooks
tapestry needle
Gauge: F hook: 9sc = 2 inches; 5 rows = inch
Steps:
To make the body of the bib:
Row 1: With white and F hook, ch 27; sc in 2nd ch from hook and in ea ch across, ch 1, turn. (26)
Rows 2-4: 2 sc in first sc, sc in ea sc across, to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn. (28,30,32)
Rows 5-33: Sc in ea sc across, ch 1, turn. (32)
To divide for neck:
First Side: Row 34: Sc in first 11 sc, leaving remaining sts unworked, ch 1, turn. (11)
Row 35: Dec over first 2 sc, sc in next 9 sc, ch 1, turn. (10)
Row 36: Sc in ea sc across, ch 1, turn. (10)
Row 37: Dec over first 2 sc, sc in next 8 sc, ch 1, turn. (9)
Row 38: Sc in ea sc across, ch 1, turn. (9)
Rows 39-44: Sc in ea sc across, ch 1, turn. (9). Fasten off.
Second Side: Row 34: Skip 10 sts from row 33 for neck; join white with a sc in next st, sc in next 10 sts, ch 1, turn. (11)
Row 35: Sc in ea sc across to last 2 sc, dec over last 2 sc, ch 1, turn. (10)
Row 36: Sc in ea sc across, ch 1, turn. (10)
Rows 37 & 38: Repeat rows 35 & 36. (9)
Rows 39-44: Sc in ea sc across, ch 1, turn. (9). Do not fasten off.
Rnd 45: Ch in, working in end of rows and in ea sc, sc around outer edge of bib, working 3 sc in top four (4) corners; join with a sl st to first sc. Fasten off.
To make the ties:
Join white with a sl st at top inner neck edge; ch 60; fasten off. Repeat for other top neck edge. Tie ends of chain into a knot.
To make the nose:
Row 1: With tangerine and F hook, ch 2; sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, turn. (1)
Rows 2 & 3: Sc in sc, ch 1, turn. (1)
Row 4: 2 sc in first sc, ch 1, turn. (2)
Rows 5-11: Sc in ea sc across, ch 1, turn. (2)
Rnd 12: Working in ends of rows and in ea sc, sc around outer edge of nose, making 3 sc in point of nose; join with a sl st to first sc.
Fasten off, leaving length for sewing.
Sew nose to center of bib, between rows 17 & 24 as shown in photo.
To make eyes (make two):
With black and F hook, ch 2; 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook; join with a sl st to first sc. (8)
Fasten off, leaving length for sewing. Sew eyes to front of bib, between rows 27 & 30 as shown in photo.
To make coal mouth pieces (make six):
With black and D hook, ch 2; 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook; join with a sl st to first sc. (4)
Fasten off, leaving length for sewing. Sew coal pieces to front of bib for mouth, placing pieces evenly spaced between rows 11 & 15 as shown in photo.
