Watering Can Fountain

Gardening expert Lill Linder shows how to make a fountain out of a watering can.

Materials:

metal watering can
electric drill, 1-1/4" hole saw, 7/8" hole saw
8-1/2" x 10" pipe
one 1/2" x 5" pipe
one 1/2" faucet
one 1/2" rubber hose
one 1/2" pipe T
two 1/2" elbows
two 1/2" connectors
one 1/2" cap
one tabletop-size pump
one 1/2" female with end adapter
TFE paste with Teflon
safety glasses

Steps:

  1. Put together the pipe, using Teflon paste to attach the pieces. Attach the faucet to the elbow, then to a 10-inch piece of pipe, then to the T, the connector, the cap, the five-inch pipe, the other elbow and the other connector (figure A).

  2. Drill two holes for the pipe into the bottom and at the top of the can with a hole saw.

  • Drill a hole toward the top, back of the can (figure B) for the pump cord.

  • Secure the pipe to the can with washers and a bracket (figure C).

  • Seal with the TFE paste on the area where the pipe meets the can--both inside and outside. Let it dry completely.

  • Attach the pump to the pipe with short pieces of hose (figure D), or use an end adapter.

  • Fill the can with water.

  • Make sure the spout is open, then plug in the pump and enjoy the soothing sound of water.
