TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham shares some of her favorite tips for using vanilla around the home.

  • Burn a vanilla candle (figure A) to remove odors in your kitchen or house.

  • Add 1/2 of a split and seeded bean to the water or milk when cooking four servings of oatmeal or other hot cereals.

  • Don't throw out withered beans because they can easily be rehydrated in a warm liquid.

  • To prevent messy spills, use an eye dropper to measure out vanilla extract (figure B).

  • Adding vanilla to soften the bite of chilies will bring out the sweetness and flavor of the peppers, yet ease the burn of the hot chilies. Add to spicy salsa.

  • Place a little vanilla in a bottle of olive oil or vinegar (figure C) to add flavor to salad dressings or other foods.

  • Add a tablespoon of vanilla to a can of paint eliminate some of the odor.

  • Make your own room freshener by adding vanilla to simmering water on the stove.
