Guest Karen Bussen joins host Stephanie Lydecker to share some creative ways to fold napkins for the dinner table. She demonstrates a chic napkin roll and also a more traditional pocket fold and shares ideas for creative napkin rings.
Napkin Folds and Rings
Simple Pocket Fold
1. Start with a square napkin and take the bottom edges of the napkin and fold the napkin up one third of the way.
2. Take the top edges and fold the top edge down, covering the first fold, leaving about 3" at the bottom.
3. Flip the napkin over. Start at the left side and fold the napkin in thirds from left to right.
4. Use the pocket to hold a flower, a stem of fresh herbs, silverware, a menu card, and more. The possibilities are endless.
Chic Napkin Roll
1. This roll is simple, yet gorgeous. Start with a square napkin (linen or cotton will give the best results). Fold the napkin in half once.
2. Starting from the right side, roll in the edge of the fabric toward the center, forming a tube shape. Stop rolling when you reach the halfway point.
3. Start from the left side and do exactly the same thing, roll the fabric towards the center until you have a double tube.
Napkins Rings and Decorations
- For napkin rolls, you will usually need to secure them. Use a pretty ribbon or even a bangle. You can also use raffia.
- Simple accents are also great to add a personal touch to any napkin — like flower blossoms, a home-printed napkin ring with a poem, quote or name. For Thanksgiving you might print quotes about gratitude on each guest's napkin and read them before dinner. Cookie cutters make great napkin rings and then the guests have a favor to take home!
